Strengthening Communities One community at a time
CFC was organized to benefit the nonprofits and families in North Lawndale
Because of Coronavirus, we could no longer enter the neighborhood.
We had to identify what we could do under these circumstances.
The concept of CFC4Food emerged
Here is an overview of how the process developed:
-
CFC made a phone call to the Costco in North Riverside-6 miles from North Lawndale
-
The manager at the Costco facility loved the idea of supplying food to needy families and agreed to make any food needed available to North Lawndale families.
-
Each week a different CFC nonprofit partner provides the names and ages for the 10 families they identify as most in need.
-
A master excel lists the food and needs for each of the family members by a nonprofit organization.
-
Costco pulls the items requested in bulk and puts them on a skid for pickup by the nonprofit for that week
-
The nonprofit picks up the skids at Costco, brings them to their facility, sorts them by family, and delivers to each family’s doorstep. With each food package, a letter is sent under the nonprofits' name, giving ideas on how to stay healthy, ideas for self-improvement, and family relationship advice.
-
CFC provides payment for items ordered to Costco each week.
There have been immediate positive responses from the families and nonprofits.

The goal of our program is to help families in need. We also want to provide healthy meals as shown in the second form below.
How CFC works with our Consortium Partners to send food to families.
-
The CFC partner identifies families that they feel have a great need for food.
-
A form is filled out listing the head of households, and the ages of all members on a form provided.
-
The nonprofit identifies a day they want to go to the Costco store to pick up the items.
-
The cartons are taken to our partners facility to be unpacked and packed in cartons by family name.
-
Delivery is made to their homes. If the family can pick up the items at the nonprofits they do.
-
After 3-4 days a call is made to each family to ensure everything is going well. It is a good opportunity to build an even stronger relationship with the family.

Why CFC chose North Lawndale as its first community
CFC wanted a primarily African American Community that was challenged. CFC felt to measure its impact that an existing large nonprofit did not control it.
We had measurement goals that we wanted to evaluate. CFC looked at over 20 Communities on the South and Westside.
12 % of Illinois state prison
population is from North Lawndale
